The Martina Franca – Lecce railway is part of the Ferrovie del Sud Est (FSE) network, which has belonged to the Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) since August 4, 2016 .

history

Today's route from Martina Franca to Lecce is historically made up of two sections with different origins:

Southern section

The Ferrovio Salentine , one in Apulia regionally active railway company , the route Lecce-Francavilla Fontana built (along with the branch line Novoli- Nardò Centrale , cf .: railway Novoli-Gagliano Leuca ). This network was opened on May 27, 1907.

Northern route section

After the First World War , the Ferrovie Salentine tried to expand their route network. One project that could be implemented was to connect the terminus of the Lecce – Francavilla Fontana line with the southern tip of the Ferrovie Sussidiate network in Locorotondo . This happened in several stages. The line to Martina Franca went into continuous operation on December 24, 1925.

FSE

From autumn 1931, a number of small regional railway companies in Apulia merged to form the Ferrovie del Sud Est. These included the Ferrovie Salentine . In the period that followed, the original kilometrage was replaced by the current one.
