Margaret Julia "Marlo" Thomas (born November 21, 1937 in Detroit , Michigan ) is an American actress and producer who celebrated her breakthrough in 1965 with the lead role in the television series Sweet but a little crazy . Since then she has worked in a large number of series and film productions and has also worked as an author, audio book speaker and for charities. Thomas has received several awards for her work, including four Emmys , a Golden Globe and a Grammy . In 2014 she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom .

Life

Childhood and youth

Marlo Thomas was born on November 21, 1937 as the first of three children to actor and comedian Danny Thomas and his wife Rose Marie Cassaniti in Detroit. Her sister Terre Thomas also became an actress, her brother Tony Thomas a television and film producer.

Thomas grew up in Beverly Hills . Her parents nicknamed her Margo , which later became her stage name Marlo . She attended Marymount High School in Los Angeles before graduating from the University of Southern California .

Career

Marlo Thomas began her acting career in 1960 with appearances on a number of popular television series. In 1965 she was cast by Mike Nichols for the female lead in the play Barefoot in the Park .

In 1965, Thomas made her breakthrough as a television actress on the sitcom Sweet But A Little Crazy , in which she starred as Ann Marie . The series produced by the American Broadcasting Company ran for six years and had a total of 136 episodes in five seasons.

After Süß, but a little crazy , Thomas continued to play mainly in television series, but now also took on roles in cinema and television films. She also continued to appear occasionally in the theater (including on Broadway in New York ) and worked as a producer of radio plays. Thomas can still be seen as a star guest in TV series and films.

In 2010 she published her memoir under the title Growing Up Laughing . She is also the author of self-help books and guides. For her services, Marlo Thomas has received some of the most important awards in the entertainment industry. In 2014, then-US President Barack Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States.

Private life

Marlo Thomas has been married to journalist, author and television presenter Phil Donahue since 1980 . The couple have no children together, but lived with Donahue's five children from their first marriage. Thomas is a private charity and chairman of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Tennessee , founded in 1962 by her father, Danny Thomas.
