Rent a Man - A man for certain seconds (Alternative title: Rent-a-Man , rent a Man , rent a Man - American Gigolo ; Original title: Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo ) is an American film comedy of Mike Mitchell from the year 1999 . The film was produced and distributed by Touchstone Pictures .

action

While the gigolo Antoine Laconte is away on business, the unsuccessful aquarium cleaner Deuce Bigalow is supposed to take care of Laconte's fish. He accidentally ransacked Laconte's apartment. In order to earn the money for the repairs, Bigalow now also competes as a gigolo - however, unlike the very good-looking Laconte, his customers are anything but dream women.

Bigalow finally falls in love with his customer Kate, an "ugly duckling" who had received the gigolo's services as a gift from her friends.

Police investigator Chuck Fowler meanwhile demands Bigalow to hand over Laconte's customer directory. As it turns out, Fowler suspects his own wife to have used Laconte's services. Bigalow can reconcile the couple, however.

In the end, Bigalow managed to renovate Laconte's apartment just in time. However, because the aquarium was glued too fresh and suffered another total write-off, the dizziness is nevertheless exposed. When the irascible Laconte attacks Bigalow, he is arrested by Fowler.

Reviews

On Rotten Tomatoes , a website that evaluates reviews, Rent a Man has a rating of 23% for a few seconds .

Lawrence Van Gelder wrote in the New York Times on December 10, 1999 that viewers would expect "a little sex" and "a little humor". The problem with the film, the title of which is reminiscent of the comedy Ace Ventura - An animal detective , is not the crude gags (“The problem ... is not its low humor”). These have a “proud history” in the films. The problem is that they are not numerous and "undemanding" ("... is the low level of its low humor", "Among devotees of comedy," Deuce Bigalow "is for the undemanding").

"Flat comedy that strings out worn-out slapstick gags and hopes in vain for the effectiveness of bizarre, weird characters."

Awards

Rob Schneider was nominated for the Blockbuster Entertainment Award in 2000. The film was nominated for Best Comedy for the Teen Choice Award in 2000.
