action

Joe dreams of a career as an actor, he works in a luxury restaurant. His girlfriend Mary works as a makeup artist and supports him financially. While he waits for a challenging role, she encourages him to take on any role.

Joe's colleague Bob likes blonde women. He makes an appointment with Sahara, but finds out that the woman is not a real blonde. Bob gets a well-paying role in a soap opera . His colleague Kelly, who is a real blonde, seduces him. To be on the safe side, Bob checks the color of her pubic hair before dropping.

Joe introduces himself to agent Dee Dee Taylor. She wants to throw him out when she hears about his high expectations. Joe is more modest, she finds him an engagement in a video clip of Madonna . He and Mary are excited when a woman introducing herself as Madonna calls and speaks on the answering machine. During the shoot, however, it turns out that it is not the real singer, but her double.

Mary visits a therapist whom she tells that she is harassed daily by a homeless person. In one of her dreams she has supernatural powers that she uses to burn the homeless man's penis. The therapist recommends a self-defense course, which she also takes. She enthusiastically practices how to ward off physical attacks.

An Afro-American assistant director tells Joe about a book in which the Holocaust is denied . Joe indignantly asks him if it is the same book as the one that says there was never slavery in the US . The African Americans would have voluntarily set out to look for work on the plantations behind the ocean and even paid for the passage. The assistant director says he doesn't find it funny . Joe gets fired, which puts a strain on Mary's sex life. Bob and Kelly's sex life also comes to a standstill. Dee Dee Taylor feels sorry for Joe and gives him another role.

Bob pushes Kelly out of the show. He makes another appointment with Sahara.

Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the film shows the difference between "illusion" and "reality" and - in a satirical way - the actors' milieu. The comedy has a message, but it is not an important aspect of the film. Berardinelli praised the portrayal of Catherine Keener and criticized that of Matthew Modine.

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on February 27, 1998, the film "meander", but mostly in an "entertaining" direction. He has too many characters and too little plot. Except for the characters of Joe and Mary, none of the characters are really well developed.

background

The film was shot in New York and Toronto . The world premiere took place on September 14, 1997 at the Deauville Film Festival . The film grossed approximately $ 250,000 in selected US cinemas.
