Blitzlichtgewitter (also known as Delirious - celebrity fever , original title: Delirious ) is an American independent film that was released in 2006 . In Germany, Arte broadcast the film in 2011. Blitzlichtgewitter is about a young homeless man who, as an assistant to a paparazzo, gets his first glimpses into the world of stars and promptly falls in love with a singer. Tom DiCillo's social satire revolves around friendship, identity and sensational journalism .

action

The homeless Toby Grace lives in New York by collecting rubbish, scrounging, and stealing from opportunities. When he makes the acquaintance of some paparazzi who are ambushing the famous singer K'Harma Leeds , he meets K'Harma for the first time, whom he helps to get out of a side door. In the evening Toby persuades the reluctant paparazzo Les Galantine that he can stay in his apartment. The next morning, Toby offers to work as an assistant for accommodation. Les agrees, offers to take Toby headshots , and the two are soon to see their first successes when they are offered the opportunity to snap a photo of a celebrity who has just come from genital surgery. Filled with pride, Les takes Toby to see his parents, to whom he wants to present his snapshot, which was published in a newspaper. However, to Les' disappointment, they are not particularly taken with it.

At the Music Awards, Toby meets K'Harma again. When she is asked who Toby is, she says, partly by necessity, partly serious, that he is her date. He then enters the VIP area and leaves Les alone. He then spends a platonic night together with K'Harma.

When he meets Les the next morning, he is disappointed and upset with Toby. When K'Harma invites Toby to her birthday party, he wants to make amends and brings Les to the party. Although he previously promised not to take any photos, he pulls out his camera, both are shown in front of the door and Toby loses K'Harma's trust. When Toby confronts Les about the fact that he had promised not to take any pictures, he sinks the memory card with the pictures as a sign that he is sorry, in the coffee. Toby, who doesn't trust Les, finds the pictures shortly afterwards on Les's computer and the two part in an argument.

Toby then achieved success as an actor in a reality soap in which he played a homeless man. Toby uses the popularity to publicly apologize to K'Harma and to confess his love to her. Meanwhile, Les tries to apologize to Toby and see him again, but Toby blocks. Les gets more and more frustrated, and when everyone around him only talks about Toby, he plans to kill him with the help of a converted camera. When he pulls out the camera in front of the red carpet to shoot Toby, however, he hesitates. When Toby sees Les and happily holds out his hand, he finally pulls out his second camera and takes a picture of Toby instead.

After the credits, you see Les talking on a talk show about the picture of Toby, with whom he eventually became famous.

main characters

Les Galantine

Because of his sullen and uncomfortable manner, Les has few friends, and he gets along best with his colleagues or competitors. Nevertheless, he gives himself to the illusion that he is no ordinary paparazzo, but a professional press photographer. His work, which he does not approach squeamishly, is characterized by the proverbs "Go with the Flow" and " Shot heard 'round the world ". He hopes in vain for recognition from his parents. Les is slowly building a real friendship with Toby.

Toby Grace

Toby, a charming young man, came to New York from Philadelphia to become an actor, where he hangs out as a homeless man. Through his work as an assistant to Les, he made the acquaintance of a casting director who gave him a role in the reality soap. He enters into a relationship with her, but it breaks up when he confesses his love for K'Harma in front of the camera.

K'Harma Leeds

K'Harma is a young, successful singer. Her parents have turned against her and are demanding $ 7 million from her for her upbringing. Her boyfriend is also soon leaving for someone else. The only support she has is from her two managers. Outwardly, she mimes the strong woman, but in reality she is deeply hurt and left alone. With her songs she expresses that she is looking for her true love. She then seems to find this in Toby, whom she calls "my homeless". When this violates her trust, she sinks back into her loneliness. For a short time, she also resumes the relationship with her ex until she sees Toby's apology on TV.

Reviews

The film received mostly good reviews. Metacritic gives a Metascore of 66/100 from 22 newspaper reviews . The Rotten Tomatoes website received 81% positive reviews from 58 reviews. The film was understood as a social satire on the superficiality of the celebrity world.

"Delirious, by director and screenwriter Tom DiCillo proves special quality because he does not see paparazzi as a target, but as a subject."

“'Delirious' is a funny and profound social satire in which director Tom DiCillo [...] targets today's star mania. The work, which has won multiple awards at film festivals, lives especially from the wonderful play by Steve Buscemi and Michael Pitt, who convince here as an unequal paparazzo duo. "

“Delirious is a film about the absurdities of star mania in today's world, about appearance and being and the self-esteem of each individual. And it's also a classic Cinderella fairy tale in which a homeless teenager manages to get to the very top. In his social satire, director Tom DiCillo wanted to show the schizophrenia of a world in which there are important people and those who are not given great value. And if the whole world considers you to be important, then you are, no matter what your opinion of yourself is. "
