The New Normal ( English for "The New Normal") is an American sitcom with Justin Bartha , Andrew Rannells and Georgia King in the lead roles. It was produced from 2012 to 2013 by 20th Century Fox Television , a sister company of 20th Century Fox , in collaboration with Ryan Murphy Productions and Ali Adler Is Here Productions for the US broadcaster NBC . It premiered in the United States on September 10, 2012 on NBC. In Germany, the broadcast began on May 8, 2013 on ProSieben in double episodes.

action

The gay couple David and Bryan live in Los Angeles and want a baby. You decide to organize a surrogate mother. You choose young Goldie who has just moved from Ohio to Los Angeles to start a new life. She brings her eight year old daughter Shania and grandmother Jane to live with David and Bryan. You all have to quickly find out that Jane cannot cope with the views of the gay couple. And then Goldie's ex-husband Clay turns up, who messes everything up.

The series was set to music at Scalamedia in Munich . Christian Langhagen and Stefan Günther wrote the dialogue books, Günther also directed the dialogue.

Production and broadcast

United States

In January 2012, NBC ordered a pilot episode of The New Normal . For this pilot episode, Andrew Rannells was hired for the first leading role. He was followed by Ellen Barkin , Justin Bartha and Georgia King . On May 8, 2012, a 13-part first season was ordered. The first broadcast began on September 10, 2012 after an episode of the US version of The Voice . The premiere was followed by 6.88 million viewers. Although the series lost viewers in the weeks that followed, NBC gave the series the so-called back-nine order in October . So the first season has 22 episodes. The season finale was watched by 3.39 million viewers on April 2, 2013.

In May 2013, NBC announced the end of the series.

Germany

In Germany, the series was initially announced for March 27, 2013 on ProSieben , but was then postponed to May 8, 2013 and shown in double episodes on Wednesdays. The first two episodes of the television series did not reach the station average with 7.2% and 7.6% market share, but the audience ratings for the third and fourth episodes improved with 9.7% and 12.7% market share of the 14 to 49 Year olds. Since the series achieved below-average ratings again, the broadcast of the remaining episodes was postponed from June 19 to July 18, 2013 after midnight. In Germany, an average of 610,000 viewers (9.9 percent) of the advertising-relevant target group and 690,000 viewers (5 percent) of the total audience followed the 22 episodes of the series.

reception

The conservative association One Million Moms criticized the series because it contained content that was harmful to children. In a statement it says: “These things harm our society and the show harms our culture. […] Millions of Americans firmly believe that marriage should only be between a man and a woman. NBC's The New Normal is trying to desensitize America and our children. It is the opposite of what families were intended and created for. You cannot reinvent the biological cycle ”. NBC's partner station in the US state of Utah , KSL-TV, refused to air the series because it contradicted its brand image.
