Veglie ( Eie in the Salentine dialect) is a southern Italian community ( comune ) in the Salentine plain .

geography

Veglie has a population of 13,697 as of December 31, 2019. It is located in the province of Lecce in Apulia , 20 kilometers west of the city of Lecce and about 12 kilometers east of the Gulf of Taranto and the Ionian Sea .

history

Veglie was founded at the beginning of the 10th century. However, in 1957 a grave from the time of settlement by the Messapians from the 3rd century BC was found.
