history

The remains of the city wall

On the north-eastern outskirts of the city, in the località Palombara, between Via San Francesco d'Assisi and Via San Domenico Savio, a short part of the once 3750 m long Messapic fortifications can be seen, which began in the 4th century BC. BC enclosed an area of about 107 hectares.

The 840 m long section in the località Sitrie, with the north gate near the Masseria Sartina, belongs to the most extensive third wall ring, which was preceded by two older ones. The wall, which is around 3.8 m wide and up to 3.0 m high, was built from even layers of large limestone blocks. The tower, which was only preserved as a foundation, was probably put in front later.

In other parts of the city, a 500 m and a 40 m long section of the wall have been preserved.

The buildings

In the Via Messapia, in the localita Cunella, a section of an approximately 8.0 m wide gravel road with adjoining buildings from the 2nd half of the 4th century BC was built. Examined. There were a number of rectangular rooms along the street that opened onto a large courtyard with a cistern . In the center of a room was an altar-like limestone block with incised decorations. A free-standing building, possibly a cult building, was erected on a platform on the neighboring property .

Near the buildings were some half-chamber graves from the 1st half of the 3rd century BC. The burial objects include strigiles, bronze spurs, bronze brooches, gold-plated silver pearls, gold pearls and a turtle shell, which once formed the body of a plucked instrument ( lyra ).

The Museo di Borgo Terra, which opened in 2004, is located on the Piazza del Popolo and shows an exhibition of the city's history from the Middle Ages to modern times.

The five menhirs of Muro Leccese from the Bronze Age stand by the place .

In 1156 the Norman Wilhelm Bosco was the first master of the settlement founded a few years earlier, which was made up of residents previously destroyed by the Saracens .

The municipality has had the title Città (city) since 1999 .
