Melissano is a south-east Italian city ​​in Apulia .

geography

The community has 6,994 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is located in the province of Lecce , about 43 kilometers south-southwest of Lecce in southern Salento . The shortest connection to the Mediterranean Sea ( Gulf of Taranto ) is 8 kilometers to the west.

history

The oldest written mention of the village comes from 1269. Melissano had less than 500 inhabitants until the beginning of the 19th century. Then a small bloom began. Since 2003 the place has been called città (city).

The Strada Statale 274 Salentina Meridionale leads through the municipality from Gallipoli (Gulf of Taranto) to Santa Maria di Leuca (district of Castrignano del Capo on the Ionian Sea).

The train station of Melissano is located on the railway line Casarano-Gallipoli .

Community partnerships

Melissano has had a partnership with the Polish municipality of Ogrodzieniec in the Silesian Voivodeship since 2000 and an intra-Italian partnership with the municipality of Verghereto in the Forlì-Cesena province .
