Spongano is a south-east Italian municipality ( comune ).
geography
The community has 3580 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is located in the province of Lecce in Apulia , about 41.5 kilometers south-southeast of the provincial capital Lecce in southern Salento .
history
In 1103 the place was mentioned by Roger II of Sicily . The community gained greater importance when in 1147, today a district of Poggiardo , was destroyed by William I of Sicily . Its population fled to the surrounding area and also settled in Spongano.
