geography

Novoli has 7773 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is located in the province of Lecce in Apulia and about 10 kilometers west-northwest of the city of Lecce in central Salento .

Surname

The name "Novoli" goes back to the Latin place name Novulum or Novale .

history

In the district were archaeological finds from the Stone Age secure. As in many other places in the province of Lecce, there is also a menhir ( Menhir Pietragrossa ) here, which is attributed to the Bronze Age .

North of Novoli, the 7th state road runs from Taranto to Lecce.

The Novoli train station is called Nòvoli . It lies on the one hand on the Martina Franca – Lecce railway line and is also the starting point for the Novoli – Gagliano Leuca railway line . The trains from Lecce to Gagliano Leuca , which make their way via Novoli, the trains on line 3 of Ferrovie del Sud Est (FSE), have to change their direction here.
