Vernole, the Chiesa Madre

Vernole is a south-eastern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 6966 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Lecce in Apulia . The word Vernole can be derived from “vero” and “olio”, which in German means something like “much” or “pure” oil. The municipality is located about 13.5 kilometers southeast of Lecce directly on the Adriatic Sea in southern Salento .

On July 26th, the Vernolesi celebrate the patron saint Anna . A large procession takes place on this day, in which almost all residents take part. A human-sized statue is then carried through the streets and alleys of Vernole. On the evening of that day there will be a fair and a concert, the concert on the town's piazza (market square) and the fair partly in Vernole and partly outside.

history

Vernole is first mentioned in a document in 1115. During the feudal period, the place remained almost meaningless. In 1961, a conflict among the population escalated when a municipal election at the end of 1960 caused the electoral system to discriminate against the citizens' list.

Attractions

In Vernole there is a church and three chapels, two inside the village and one outside at the cemetery.

economy

Below the piazza is an old oil mill that used to be in operation. Today the olives are brought to an outside mill for grinding. Vernole lives mainly from olive oil production, but also from tourism, as it is only about seven kilometers from the sea.
