Salve is a southern Italian municipality in the Apulia region .

geography

The community has 4555 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is located in the province of Lecce and about 12 km from Cape Santa Maria di Leuca .

history

The Salve area has been inhabited since the Bronze Age. In the 9th century a city wall was built to defend against the Saracens , as well as against the Ottomans in the 15th century .

After the Second World War , the malaria-infested , previously uninhabitable marshland along the coast were drained. They could thus be used for the first time. Bathing tourism developed here, which today is one of the most important economic sectors in the region.

Personalities
