Patience Gray

Patience Gray (born Patience Jean Stanham, October 31, 1917 in Shackleford , Surrey ; died March 10, 2005 in Salve , Italy ) was a British cookbook author .

Life

Patience Stanham was the daughter of a doctor and army officer and the maternal granddaughter of an Eastern European rabbi who emigrated to England and became a Unitarian priest there. She studied economics in Bonn and at the London School of Economics (B.Sc.). In 1939 she worked at the Arts Council , where she began an affair with the married Thomas Gray, who already had two children, they had two more. In 1941 she called herself Patience Gray in the London Gazette . In addition to her role as a single parent, she had various jobs, worked for designer Henri Kay Henrion at the Festival of Britain in 1951 and published the book Indoor Plants and Gardens by Margaret E. Jones in 1952 . In 1957, her cookbook Plats Du Jour was published , which sold very well, and a new edition was published in 2006. From 1958 to 1962 she was the first editor for the women's website introduced by the Observer .

In the 1960s she began a relationship with the sculptor Norman Mommens (1922-2000), who at the time was still married to the potter Ursula Mommens (1908-2010). They moved together around the Mediterranean ( Fasting and Feasting in Tuscany, Catalonia, the Cyclades and Apulia ) and lived from 1970 to the end of their lives in a farm workers' house in Apulia , they were still married in 1994. Author Alan Davidson arranged for her second book, Honey From a Weed, to be published in 1986 by Prospect Books.
