Ugento ( Uscentu in the local dialect) is a southern Italian community ( comune ).

geography

Ugento has 12,360 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is located in the province of Lecce in Apulia , in southern Salento , about 47.5 kilometers south of the city of Lecce directly on the Mediterranean Sea , at the transition from the Gulf of Taranto to the Ionian Sea .

history

Ugento may be identical to a place known as Uxentum or Ozan in ancient times . In the eighth book of the Aeneid Uxentum is mentioned, which is said to have been founded by Uxens . It was a Messapier settlement . Another hypothesis suggests a place called Ausentum .

The area was under Byzantine rule until 1020 when the Normans conquered the area. In 1537 the city was destroyed in an attack by Ottoman troops.

  • Collezione Adolfo Colosso (approx. 50 m from the Archaeological Museum)
