Vincent of Valencia , also Vincent of Saragossa (* in Osca , Roman province of Tarraconensis , † around 304 in Valentia ) was a martyr in Hispania .

Life

According to legend, Vincent was the deacon of the aged bishop Valerius of Saragossa . Datianus , the governor of the province of Tarraconensis, had them arrested at the time of the persecution of Christians under Emperor Diocletian . Both were tortured in Valencia: Vinzenz was thrown naked into a dark tower, his limbs stretched and torn by hooks, he was laid on a glowing grate until he finally died on a bed of broken glass. Angels allegedly consoled him and turned the grate and the torture bed into a delicate bed of flowers. Out of anger, the governor refused the funeral - he was supposed to be eaten by dogs and birds. The corpse, exposed to the animals in the open, was guarded by angels and defended by two ravens . Then it was sewn into an ox skin and weighed down with a millstone and sunk into the sea. However, the waves washed him ashore, where he was found and buried by a pious widow .

Already in the 4th century the veneration of Paulinus von Nola and Augustinus von Hippo is mentioned in particular. Vincent's bones were transferred from Valencia to Lisbon in 1160 . His feast day is considered the middle of winter.

He is the patron saint of Portugal . In addition, he is considered, among other things, as the patron saint of lumberjacks , seamen , roofers and potters , poultry and coffee houses , as well as an aid in case of weakness and as a helper in recovering stolen things. In Burgundy , his feast day is greatly appreciated by the winemakers. The Saint-Vincent tournante festival is now a tourist attraction.

The Caribbean island of St. Vincent is named after him because Christopher Columbus discovered it on the day of the saint's remembrance.
