Huesca [ ˈweska ] ( Aragonese Uesca ; Catalan Osca ) is the capital of the Spanish province of Huesca and is located in the autonomous region of Aragon . It has 53,132 inhabitants 362,971 (as of January 1, 2019) and is therefore the second largest city in Aragon.

Huesca is located on the Isuela River . The city is at an altitude of 488 msnm and has a continental Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and cold winters. The distance to Zaragoza is around 70 km and to Madrid around 380 km.
history
In the 1st century BC Osca (old name of Huesca) was a Roman settlement . It was also the residence of the Roman general and politician Sertorius , who first founded a school for distinguished Spaniards here, but then in 72 BC. Was murdered here. From 713 the place was owned by the Arabs . The city came under Christian power again in 1098 and became the seat of its conqueror, Pedro I. From 1096 to 1118, the city was then the capital of the Kingdom of Aragón .
Under Napoleon, Huesca was occupied by French troops. During the Spanish Civil War , the opponents fought for two years for supremacy in Huesca.
Buildings
- The 13th century Gothic cathedral of Huesca with high altar . Influences from Gothic and Renaissance mix here . The diocesan museum is integrated.
- The church of San Pedro el Viejo , with its cloister , dates from the 12th century.

Every year there is a festival in honor of the patron saint, San Lorenzo . The city was also the birthplace of Vincent de Valencia .
About 30 km away is the Loarre Castle ( Castillo de Loarre ) with an eventful history.
Economy and Infrastructure
Huesca is on the Saragossa – Canfranc railway line . The region has access to international air traffic via the Huesca-Pirineos Airport ( Aeropuerto de Huesca-Pirineos , ICAO: LEHC), which is nine kilometers south-east of the city .
