Betesa

Arén ( Catalan Areny de Noguera ) is a Catalan-speaking municipality belonging to the Franja de Aragón in the province of Huesca in the autonomous community of Aragon in Spain . It is located in the pre-Pyrenees in the Comarca Ribagorza on the N-230 road west of the Noguera Ribagorzana river .

The municipality includes the (partly no longer inhabited) localities

  • Former municipality of Arén :
Arén, Campamento de Arén, Sobrecastell, Berganuy, Claraválls, Puifel and Soliva.
  • Former municipality of Cornudella de Baliera :
Rivera de Vall, San Martín, El Sas, Casa Consistorial, Puimolar, L'Hostalet, Vilaplana, Soperún, Iscles, Suerri and Tresserra.
  • Former municipality of Betesa :
Betesa, Santa Eulalia, Los Molins de Betesa and Obís.

history

Until the end of the 18th century there was a garrison in Arén, which was then moved to Benasque . The former municipality of Cornudella de Baliera was incorporated in 1965, the former municipality of Betesa in 1966.

economy

Cattle-breeding and agriculture are predominant; in addition, tourism has gained in importance.

Attractions

  • The old governor's house with the Centro Historico de la Ribagorza (inaugurated in 1995).
  • The large late baroque parish church of San Martín.
  • Hermitage of Rigatell and Santa Eulàlia (Betesa).
  • Various prehistoric monuments in the municipal area (dolmen and a menhir).
  • Remains of a castle from the 10th century.
