Puente la Reina de Jaca is a municipality ( municipality ) on the Way of St. James in the foothills of the Pyrenees . It is located in the Comarca Jacetania in the province of Huesca in the autonomous community of Aragon . In addition to Puente la Reina de Jaca, Javierregay and Santa Engracia de Jaca also belong to the municipality.
geography
Despite its name, the place must not be confused with Puente la Reina , where the Navarre and Aragonese branches of the Camino de Santiago meet. Both have in common the eponymous construction of a bridge at the instigation of a queen. In times of expensive and dangerous river crossings, these infrastructure projects directed the flow of pilgrims and often led to the establishment of market towns . This was facilitated by the fact that four paths crossed at Puente la Reina de Jaca
- the road from Huesca ,
- the road from Pamplona ,
- the road over the Somport
- and the road over the then important Pyrenees crossing Puerto de Palo , west of the Somport.
It is assumed that the place is identical to the Osturit mentioned in the Book of Jacob .
The Aragón flows here through a depression called the Canal de Berdún , which today is partially filled by the Yesa dam reservoir. The Way of St. James divides behind the village and follows the north (visit to Leyre Abbey possible) or the south bank of the dam.
economy
Agriculture, especially livestock farming, is traditionally the municipality's largest source of income. Thanks to the pilgrims to St. James and the increasingly important winter sports - especially in Javierregay - tourism is a rapidly growing industry in the region.
