Artieda

Artieda is a Spanish municipality in the foothills of the Pyrenees on the edge of the Camino de Santiago . It is located in the Comarca Jacetania in the province of Saragossa in the autonomous community of Aragon .

The village is situated on a hill on the southern side of the valley , the Canal de Berdún is called, near the Yesa Dam and is designed as a fortified village. It can be reached from Jaca and Pamplona on national road 240 and the Camino de Santiago.

history

Even if the founding as a villa is only documented for 1276, there is evidence of Artieda from the Roman era. In the parcels of Campo de royo, Forao de la tuta, Viñas del Sastre and Corrales de Villasués, there are other archaeological sites from Roman times.

At least one change of landlord is known from the Middle Ages and from 919 at the latest the village belonged to the Leyre monastery because it was at that time that it paid its tithe there.

architecture

The village has largely retained its medieval character. It is shaped by the folk architecture of the Aragonese mountain regions, but there are also buildings with Renaissance and classical influences such as the Casa del Hospital.

The single-nave church comes from the Romanesque and is dedicated to St. Martin consecrated. Two chapels were built in the 17th century as part of slight renovations. The altar and reredos also date from the 17th and 18th centuries.

In addition to the parish church, there are several hermitages in the municipality: Ermita de San Pedro, Ermita de San Babil, Ermita de Santa Lucía, Ermita de Santa Cruz and Ermita de San Tornil.

Another important building is the already mentioned Casa de los Diezmos, which was built on March 18, 918 as a gift from the royal couple Sancho Garcés and Toda de Navarra.

climate

The climate in the Canal de Berdún is a dry Mediterranean-continental mountain climate. For the Pyrenees and the mountain ranges that surround them, this means mild summers and long, cold winters.
