Puente la Reina ( Gares in Basque ) is a municipality with 2840 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in the autonomous region of Navarre ( Spain ). In Puente la Reina the Aragonese and Navarre branches of the Camino de Santiago unite , the common path crosses the Arga river over the bridge of the same name.
history
The name and development are linked to the bridge donated by Queen Dona Mayor of Navarre, wife of King Sancho Mayor , or her daughter-in-law. Despite all the uncertainty about the founder, the construction of the bridge is certain in the first half of the 11th century.
Because river crossings were dangerous, detours long and ferry services expensive, the streams of pilgrims soon concentrated on this bridge. This was followed by the settlement of Franconia and the establishment of a market town . The development of the city is an example of the infrastructure projects of this time and their impact, and can often be found in a comparable form on the Camino de Santiago.
In 1122 it was granted city rights, and construction of the city wall began in 1235. This was followed by the gift of the city by García IV. To the Templars , and after their dissolution at the beginning of the 14th century it passed to the Johanniter .

Culture and sights
- Iglesia del Crucifijo / Kruzifix-Kirche
Church of the former Templar monastery (13th / 14th century) with a Romanesque portal from the previous chapel and a Y-cross of the soft late Gothic style as special features. The latter is said to come from the Rhineland.
- Santiago Church
12-16 Century, with a typical Navarre Romanesque spiked portal. The tower dates from the 18th century, weathered scenes from the story of creation on the portal, inside a wooden figure of Santiago Peregrino with staff and shell from the 14th century
- Also noteworthy are the old noble and town houses adorned with coats of arms along the old main street. Many of them feature artfully crafted rafters , a characteristic of Navarre architecture.
Town twinning
