Goizueta (Basque Goizeta ) is a village with 704 inhabitants (as of 2019) in the Basque- speaking north of the province of Navarre in Spain .
The place, which is wedged in a north-south direction in the narrow valley of the Urumea River, consists largely of natural stone residential buildings in the style of the 19th century. The former wash house behind the town hall, fed by the water of the Urumea, is remarkable.
In the north Goizueta borders on Rentería and Oyarzun , in the south on Leiza , Ezcurra , Erasun , Beinza-Labayen and Zubieta , in the east on Arano , Elduayen and Berástegui and in the west on Lesaca and Aranaz .
Most of the area of Goizueta consists of steep, wooded slopes on the up to approx. 1053 m high mountains Mendaur , Recaldo , Loizate , Articuza , Urdiñola , Aniz , San Pedro and Larrea . Most of the land (37 km²) belongs to the Finca de Artikutza , owned by the city of Donostia-San Sebastián .
The provincial road NA 4150 runs through the village from Hernani (Province of Guipúzcoa ) to Leitza.
Surname
The name comes from the "upper bridge" (Basque: "Zubi Haundi"), which crosses the Urumea River in the center of the village. It is made up of the Basque terms goi (dt. Above ), zubi (dt. Bridge ) and eta (dt. And , used here as a suffix to assign the name to a place)
Tourism
The Iskibi campsite is located about 1.5 km north of the village in a bend in the Urumea river . In 2012 the municipality (with funding from the Province of Navarra) opened a hostel with 30 beds in 2- to 10-bed rooms on the upper floors of the old washhouse.
Culture
Almost all residents (94.8%) speak Basque. Goizueta is known for the intensive cultivation of traditional Basque culture. The high quality of the village choir, in which approx. 5% of the residents are active, is remarkable.
economy
In the village itself there are two grocery stores, a grocery store with a bar, a car repair shop, a bus operator, a taxi operator, a hairdresser, a tobacco shop with lottery acceptance, a bakery, a pharmacy, a butcher's shop as well as four other pubs and a church on the village square. The majority of the residents work in the industrial areas of Hernani, about 20 km north. Some of the families living on the mountain slopes outside the town center still operate subsistence farming. There is also a beekeeper of German origin here.
politics
Goizueta is known for the Basque national attitude of a large majority of its residents. In the regional elections 2011, the list "Euskal Herria Bildu" (Eng. "Basque Country Associations") won over 80% and the list "Nafarroa Bai" (Eng. "Navarra yes") another 12% of the votes.
