Cizur ( Basque Zizur Zendea ) is a community municipality in the autonomous community of Navarre and is located about seven kilometers west of Pamplona . The community consists of eleven places, eight of which have their own local council ( Concejo ). The places with their own representations are Astrain , Cizur Menor , Gazólaz , Larraya , Muru-Astrain , Paternáin , Undiano and Zariquiegui . In addition, the now uninhabited places Eriete , Guenduláin and Sagues belong to the municipality. The old name Cendea de Cizur is also in use.

history

Ayuntamiento de la Cendea de Cizur.

As finds of worked flint show, the municipality was already settled in prehistoric times. In the Middle Ages, the Guenduláin Castle and other mansions in other villages were built. During this time, large parts of the municipality were owned by ecclesiastical institutions such as the Order of Malta and the monasteries of Irache and Roncesvalles . In the 16th and 17th centuries the population experienced a certain economic boom. The 20th century was marked by a strong population increase in places close to Pamplona, while the rural places were marked by decline.

City administration

In 1979 the first democratic local elections took place in which all adult residents with Spanish or EU citizenship were allowed to participate. Eleven community council members were elected. The town hall with the seat of the mayor is located in Gazólaz.

economy

The community is mainly agricultural. The tourist service sector has experienced considerable growth in recent years due to the rapidly increasing number of pilgrims and tourists on the Camino Francés .
