Lumbier ( Basque Irunberri ) is a place in the Spanish region of Navarra and at the same time the capital of a subzona of that region according to the territorial division of Navarra 2000 , which corresponds roughly to a comarca . In 2019 the municipality had 1,318 inhabitants on an area of 57 km². Its center is at an altitude of 465 m, the most famous attraction is the Foz de Lumbier gorge .

In the 1st century, Pliny called the inhabitants of the area the Iluberritani when describing groups coming together in present-day Saragossa . In 1656, Arnaut d'Oihenart identified the Lumbier, called Irumberri , with the Iluberritani of Pliny. Because of the meaning of the word, Iluberritani was viewed as a misspelling and reformed as Ilumberritani by Oihenart and others . berri is a Basque adjective that means "new", while ilum means "shady, dark" and probably refers to the Lumbier gorge. Arturo Campión (1907) and Hugo Schuchardt (1907) took the opposite position, according to which the interpretation of "ilu" as a variant of ili , "village, city", is more plausible and Iluberri referred to a (new) fortification of the named tribe. From the findings mentioned, Ramón Menéndez Pidal derived that the original name was converted to Navarro-Roman Lumbierre or Lumbier . Since the 11th century Lumbier has been named in various documents as Lomberri (1039), Lumberri (1050), Lomber (1102), Lombier (1121) and Lumber (1125), in the 13th century also as Lumbier.

Lumbier is located in the western part of Navarre, now officially non-Basque- speaking, in the pre- Pyrenees on the border with Aragon ; however, up to 10% of the population is considered to be bilingual Spanish-Basque. The municipality of Lumbier belongs to zone 1, northwestern Navarra, and gives its name to its subzonal district 8, Lumbier. The district also includes Romanzado and Urraúl Alto and Urraúl Bajo , among others .
