Ujué is a municipality in the north of Spain in the autonomous community of Navarre . The old town center was classified as a cultural asset ( Bien de Interés Cultural ) in the Conjunto histórico-artístico category.
location
Ujué is located on the southern edge of the Pyrenees at an altitude of about 815 meters above sea level. d. M. The distance to Pamplona is almost 70 kilometers (driving distance) in a north-westerly direction. Both Pamplona and the nearly 40 kilometers east location neighboring Sanguesa are on the Way of St. James .
Population development of the municipality

Until 1960 the population was always over a thousand people. The sharp decline in population is due to the mechanization of agriculture and the migration of many young people to the cities - in 2003 around half of Ujué's population was over 60 years old.
economy
Agriculture is traditionally the most important economic factor. Since many houses were vacant due to emigration, tourism in the form of renting holiday apartments ( casas rurales ) has been an important branch of business since the 1980s .
history
There are hardly any finds from pre-Roman, Roman, Visigothic and Islamic times; an Arab chronicler mentions a fortress called Santa María as part of the Pamplona ring of fortified cities. The name Santa María de Uxua appears in medieval documents since the 9th century . A city fortification is first attested for the 11th century - a time in which Sancho Ramírez was king of Aragón (ruled 1063-1098) and Navarre (ruled 1076-1098). He is also considered to be the founder and / or benefactor of the first church, which was, however, renovated in Gothic style under Charles II of Navarre . A statue of the Madonna - allegedly discovered by a priest in a cave - was already used by pilgrims at this time, including King Charles III. of Navarre , venerated. After the conquest of the southern part of the kingdom of Navarre by Ferdinand of Aragon in 1512, Ujué lost all strategic importance and, as a result, a considerable part of its inhabitants.
Attractions

- The main attraction of Ujué is the medieval-looking townscape with its narrow streets and a small square in the center.
- The oversized-looking church of Santa María - originally Romanesque, later redesigned in Gothic styles and surrounded by a wall - dates from the 11th and 14th centuries. This wall, the almost windowless lower half of the building, the representative, but also somehow castle-like west facade with a kind of defensive or guard passage and the two towers with their crenellated platforms clearly testify to the character of a fortified church . In contrast to this is the Gothic tympanum on the west facade from the 14th century with a depiction of the adoration of the kings who followed the star at the top; in the lintel below is a scene from the Lord's Supper with Judas Iscariot crouching in front of the table . The spacious, but single-nave interior of the Gothic western part contrasts with the three apses of the eastern Romanesque part. Its central apse , which is provided with double columns and perfectly designed in terms of masonry, houses the medieval statue of a crowned Mother of God with the blessing and also crowned baby Jesus ( sedes sapientiae ) , which was highly venerated in earlier times . The baroque pulpit shows the four evangelists ; Below the west gallery is a Romanesque baptismal font adorned with archaic-looking figures .
- The late Romanesque hermit chapel ( Ermita de la Blanca ) has been renewed several times.
- The also late Romanesque church ( Iglesia San Miguel ), which stands isolated on the outskirts, is in a ruinous state; the west side shows a late Romanesque step portal with archivolts , a round window and a double-arched bell gable ( espadaña ).
- A late Gothic wayside cross ( Cruz del Saludo ) from the 15th century is about one kilometer from the entrance to the village.
