history

Bronze Age finds testify to the long settlement of the region; Celtic , Roman or Visigoth finds have not yet been made. In the 8th and 9th centuries, Arab- Moorish armies penetrated the area, but could not establish themselves permanently; in 924 an existing fortress was taken over by the troops of Abd ar-Rahmans III. taken. In the year 882 the place name Sancosa is mentioned for the first time and in the year 1090 Sancho I of Aragón endowed the existing old settlement core (today the suburb Rocaforte ) with privileges ( fueros ) . In the 11th century a bridge was built over the Río Aragón, near which King Sancho I of Aragón and Navarre (r. 1063 / 76-1074) had a (no longer existing) palace built. The current city was founded in 1122 by Alfonso I (ruled 1104–1134) and populated with settlers from France; in 1131 he also donated the church of Santa María la Mayor and handed it over to the Order of St. John . In the following years a city wall with a total of six gates was built, because during the entire Middle Ages the city and its surroundings remained controversial between the kingdoms of Navarre and Aragón .

Attractions

South portal of Santa María la Mayor
  • Parts of the city still have a medieval character. The Way of St. James leads through Calle Mayor , which is also home to the Church of Santa María and several noble palaces worth seeing.
  • The Catholic parish church of Santa María la Real was built in different stages, the oldest of which dates back to around 1131; the octagonal tower was built in the 13th century. Facing the pilgrimage, the portal of the south transept protrudes from the transition period from Romanesque to Gothic with a depiction of the Last Judgment . In its execution, the figurative decoration has similarities to that of the king portal of the cathedral of Chartres ; in its imaginative variety it goes far beyond that. In the Gothic interior dominated by bundle pillars , there is a beautiful altarpiece and a miraculous image of the Virgin of Rocamadour , which underlines the influence of the French pilgrims and settlers on the Camino de Santiago.
  • The Church of San Salvador has a Gothic portal with a protective porch that was added later.
  • The church of Santiago el Mayor has a Gothic portal with a statue of the Apostle James in the tympanum field ; next to it, two painted kneeling pilgrims can be seen. Inside there is an almost life-size statue of Santiago on a pedestal.
