location
Artajona is located on a rocky hill about 35 kilometers (driving distance) southwest of Pamplona . The places Sangüesa (56 kilometers east), Puente la Reina (about 14 kilometers north) and Estella (32 kilometers northwest) are important stops on the Spanish Way of St. James ( Camino de Santiago ).
Population development of the municipality
economy
Traditionally, agriculture (including viticulture), handicrafts and trade are of great importance to the economic life of the small town. The rapidly increasing mechanization of agriculture in the second half of the 20th century lost many jobs. In return, tourism - especially the rental of holiday apartments - was added as a source of income for the city.
history
About four kilometers away are the remains of two megalithic dolmens that date back to the 4th millennium BC. To be dated. Excavations in the winter of 2007/08 uncovered traces of a Roman settlement in the vicinity of today's location; a Roman milestone from the 3rd century was found earlier. As a result of the advance of Islam into northern Spain, the area became depopulated, but was repopulated in the 10th and 11th centuries. In 1084 Pedro de Roda (or Pedro de Roquez ), who was Bishop of Pamplona from 1083 to 1115 , gave the property of the town to the Saint-Sernin Abbey of Toulouse , whose priory it remained until 1536. In the high Middle Ages, Artajona was part of the upstream defense ring of the city of Pamplona and was therefore strongly fortified; the city wall visible today, however, dates from the 14th century. After the conquest of the Kingdom of Navarre by Ferdinand of Aragon (1512), the city lost all strategic importance.
Attractions
- Nine of the original 16 towers have been preserved from the late medieval city wall. These protrude only slightly outwards, while they were open on the inside and had wooden intermediate platforms. Within the city walls, the keep ( torre de homenaje ) , which was destroyed today, stood with mighty outer walls on a round floor plan.
- The former Gothic priory church of San Saturnino stands on the highest point of the small town; With its high-lying windows and its massive-looking west facade, it impressively expresses its defensive character, which is also visible in the battlements and on the parapet walls of the roof area. The mighty sloping south tower secures and stabilizes the apse . Overall, in terms of architecture, the church bears certain similarities, both inside and out, to Gothic church buildings in the south-west of France - above all the Albi Cathedral or the former St-Sernin Abbey in Toulouse , with which it bears the rare patronage of St. Saturninus has in common. The block-like effect of the west facade is only loosened up by a beautiful rose window , two rows of six Gothic blind arcades and the stepped portal with a figural tympanum field , which shows scenes from the martyrdom of St. Saturninus shows. The nave of the church, which is more than twelve meters wide, is spanned by a ribbed vault. In the apse, which is drawn in at the side and in the height, there is an altarpiece from the early 16th century with painted scenes from the Passion of Christ.
- The Gothic church of San Pedro also dates from the 13th century. The two non-figurative Gothic portals in the west and on the north side are of particular interest.
- For centuries, two cistern wells served to supply the population with water.
- The two dolmens ( Mina de Farangortea and Portillo de Enériz ) are located - only about 800 meters apart - about four kilometers outside of Artajona. Their cover plates have long since collapsed.
