Martyrdom of Saturninus, Jacobus de Voragine , 14th century

Saturninus (French: Saturnin, Cernin, Sadorni, Sarny, Savournin, Sernin or Sorlin) was the first bishop of Toulouse , his patronage is November 29 (Protestant and Roman Catholic memorial day).

Life

He was one of the seven men ordained bishops who, according to Gregory of Tours (538-594) , were sent to the mission to Gaul at the time of Emperor Decius , i.e. in the years 249-251 . The Passio of Saturninus dates back to the 17th century and was widespread in the Visigoths' sphere of influence. The other missionaries were: Gatianus of Tours , Trophimus of Arles , Paul of Narbonne , Dionysius of Paris , Stremonius of Auvergne and Martial of Limoges , who are each considered to be the first bishops of their diocese .

Regarding Saturninus, Gregory also reports that he was already preaching in Toulouse in 250.

Besides Dionysius, Saturninus was the only one of the seven missionaries who was martyred : after he was arrested, he was taken to the Capitol (what is now the City Hall of Toulouse ), where he is tied to the tail of an angry bull and brought down from the Capitol Was dragged to death.

Saturninus was buried in a necropolis outside the city, his successor Hilarius (358-360) had a wooden oratory built over the place , which was later replaced by the church of St-Saturnin-du-Taur, today Notre-Dame du Taur . The relics were transferred to the Basilica of St-Sernin de Toulouse as early as 400 , which Hilarius' successors Silvius (360–400) and Exuperius (405–411) had built.
