Martial of Limoges
According to the old tradition, St. Martial (also Martialis ) was the first bishop of Limoges . He came from the Orient and, sent by the Pope, probably came in the middle of the 3rd century AD on the Roman road via Bourges to Limoges. Gregory of Tours reports that Martial was one of the seven bishops who had worked in Gaul during the reign of Emperor Decius (249-251). The Saint-Martial monastery was founded over his grave in 848 .
In the period from 990 to 1028 Martial was in the course of God's peace movement through a newly written Vita the cousin of the Apostle Peter , the disciple of Jesus, being part of the Last Supper , on the Ascension and Pentecost explained. From then on he was one of the most important saints in France.
The feast of St. Martial is celebrated on June 30th. The Church of San Marzilian in Venice is dedicated to him.
