Bibliotheca Hagiographica Latina

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bibliotheca Hagiographica Latina , usually abbreviated to BHL, is a tool created by the Bollandists that provides information on the various versions, the handwritten tradition and the editions of the lives of saints and other hagiographic texts ( Passio , Translatio ) in Latin.

For the Latin area there has also been an online database since 1999, which enables queries for the name of the saint , for the number of the entry in the BHL and for the incipit (test phase). Information about the handwritten transmission can also be called up.

The repertory is an essential addition to the Acta Sanctorum . In the scientific literature, the reference to the BHL Standard is comparable to the references to regest collections such as the Regesta Imperii .
