Legends and Adoration
According to a legend that originated around the year 450, Trophimus was a student of the apostle Peter . With this legend, the bishops of Arles wanted to emphasize the important position of their diocese. According to other legends, he was a student of the Apostle Paul , because in the Acts of the Apostles ( Acts 21.29 EU ) there is an account of an Ephesian named Trophimus, who belonged to the company of Paul and possibly in 2 Timothy ( 2 Tim 4:20 EU ) is mentioned again; he is said to have suffered martyrdom under Emperor Nero in Rome around the year 70 .
Trophimus is also venerated as a saint. Ado von Vienne brought the biblical Trophimus in connection with the first bishop of Arles in the 9th century ; the city 's former cathedral and today's main church is named after him. His feast day is December 29th.
