According to tradition, Saint Trophimus was the first bishop of the city of Arles ( France ) when it became the seat of a diocese in the middle of the 3rd century .

Life

According to Gregory of Tours , Trophimus was ordained bishop around the year 250 with six other companions. With his companions ( Gatianus of Tours, Paulus of Narbonne , Saturninus of Toulouse , Austremonius of Clermont , Dionysius of Paris and Martial of Limoges ) he was sent on a mission to Gaul . It is first attested to in a letter from the year 417.

Legends and Adoration

According to a legend that originated around the year 450, Trophimus was a student of the apostle Peter . With this legend, the bishops of Arles wanted to emphasize the important position of their diocese. According to other legends, he was a student of the Apostle Paul , because in the Acts of the Apostles ( Acts 21.29  EU ) there is an account of an Ephesian named Trophimus, who belonged to the company of Paul and possibly in 2 Timothy ( 2 Tim 4:20  EU ) is mentioned again; he is said to have suffered martyrdom under Emperor Nero in Rome around the year 70 .

Trophimus is also venerated as a saint. Ado von Vienne brought the biblical Trophimus in connection with the first bishop of Arles in the 9th century ; the city 's former cathedral and today's main church is named after him. His feast day is December 29th.
