Facade of Notre-Dame du Taur in Toulouse

The church Notre Dame du Taur in Toulouse was built according to legend, at the place where the body of Saturninus of Toulouse at his martyrdom of the bull (lat. Taurus solved), which dragged it behind her. The church is on Rue du Taur between the Place du Capitole and the Saint-Sernin basilica . It was included in the list of historical monuments as early as 1840 .

history

Saturninus was the first bishop of Toulouse, he preached there around the year 250. A first oratory was built by Bishop Hilarius of Toulouse († 360) for the pilgrims on the site of his martyrdom , a brick vault, which is surmounted by a prayer room made of wood According to tradition, this oratory was at the current location of the church. The archaeological excavations that were carried out in the years 1969-1970 inside the church, however, did not bring to light any early Christian construction. It is therefore not possible to precisely locate the first place of the grave or that of the memorial to Saint Hilaire. On the other hand, it is possible that the church is on the spot where the body of Saturninus broke away from the bull that was dragging him through the city.

The Saturninus relics were kept in the year 402 and transferred to the Saint-Sernin basilica, which today bears the changed name of Saint Saturninus.

The church was called Église du Taur until the 11th century. In the 12th century it was named Saint-Sernin du Taur, and in 1534 it was named Notre-Dame du Taur.
