Exuperius of Toulouse
Exuperius ( French Exupère , Supèri or Spire ; * late 4th century in Arreau , today Département Hautes-Pyrénées ; † around 410 in Blagnac , today Département Haute-Garonne ) was an early Christian bishop of Toulouse and saint of the Roman Catholic Church and contemporary of Jerome of Stridon . As Bishop of Toulouse, he succeeded St. Sylvius , who officiated from 360 to 400. His feast days are September 28th and June 14th.
Vita
According to tradition, he directed the construction of a basilica dedicated to Saint Saturninus , the first bishop of Toulouse, and consecrated the previous Roman Temple of Minerva to the Virgin Mary (today Basilique Notre-Dame de la Daurade ). He is said to have sold all church goods, including the sacred vessels of his church, to alleviate the plight of the people who were ruined by the barbarian invasions.
Relic box
On one side of his reliquary box , the crucified Christ between Mary and John the Baptist can be seen, below the death of Exuperius; on the other side you can see the bishop preaching and below the scene of how he stopped the vandals at the gates of the city of Toulouse.
