Jorge Abbondanza

Jorge Abbondanza (born March 6, 1936 in Montevideo , Uruguay ; † August 28, 2020 ) was a Uruguayan cultural journalist , critic and artist .

Life

Abbondanza who had worked as a journalist since the late 1950s, starting with the daily newspaper El Bien Público , including at least 34 years with El País , worked for numerous domestic and foreign newspapers. He worked mainly as a film, theater and art critic. As such, he wrote numerous monographs, was a member of various juries and represented his home country at international competitions and festivals. Abbondanza also served as president of the Critics' Association (Asociación de Críticos) and served as an advisor to the Uruguayan Ministry of Education and Culture (MEC) and the Intendencia Municipal of Montevideo . He also appeared as a book author. In 1991, he published a biography of the painter Manuel Espínola Gómez . Five years later he published a collection of his own notes and essays under the title El gran desfile .

Abbondanza, who studied drawing and painting at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes (ENBA), was also able to draw attention to himself artistically . He had been working as a potter with Enrique Silveira since 1958 . Together they also went on study trips to Latin America, Europe and the USA.

Abbondanza has exhibited his works in national and international exhibitions, including the Museo de Arte Moderno in Buenos Aires , the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome , the São Paulo Biennale and the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow .

While he was awarded the Premio Figari in 1999 together with Enrique Silveira , Abbondanza was also a member of the jury and the coordinating council for the awarding of the prizes from 1995 to 1997, from 2002 to 2004 and 2011.

Abbondanza was a member of the Asociación de Críticos Cinematográficos and the Sección Uruguaya de la Asociación Internacional de Críticos Teatrales .
