Buñuel is a Spanish municipality in the Merindade (approximately district) Tudela in the very south of the Comunidad Foral de Navarra . It belongs to the comarca (about district) Ribera Navarra and is located to the right of the Ebros about 110 km south of Pamplona and 15 km southeast of Tudela . The A-68 ( Autovía del Ebro ) and the AP-68 ( Autopista Vasco-Aragonesa ) pass a few kilometers southwest.

history

The first traces of settlement in the area go back to the Neolithic and in Roman times a Roman road led along the Ebros. Buñuel's existence as a settlement dates back to the time after the Reconquista under King Alfonso I of Aragon in the 12th century. The Order of Malta was active here at this time. After 1252, Europe's first artificial irrigation system was built here on the Ebro.

After Navarre became part of the united Spanish kingdom after 1492, there were disputes between the communities lying on the Ebro. It was about the allocation of water to irrigate the fields. Emperor Charles V settled the dispute to the effect that another canal, the Imperial Canal of Aragón , was built, this should ensure the irrigation of Aragonese areas.

Modern times began in Buñuel in 1861 when the station on the Ebro Valley railway line opened four kilometers outside. In 1934 another canal, the Victoria-Alfonso Canal, was opened.

During the civil war there was a field airfield northwest of Buñuel , which was used by Spanish national units in 1937/38 and by parts of the German Condor Legion . A part of the Dornier Do 17 "Bacalao" of the reconnaissance squadron 88 (A / 88) lay here until May 1938 , while the remainder was in a thousand 20 km southeast. From mid-December, the group relocated to Buñuel in support of the Spanish national offensive for the final conquest of Catalonia. The machines moved to the conquered Sabadell at the end of January 1939 .
