Residents 2,730 3.115 4,407 4,598 4,764

Despite the phylloxera crisis in viticulture, the increasing mechanization of agriculture , the abandonment of small farms and the resulting unemployment in rural areas, the population figures have remained largely stable since the second half of the 20th century.

economy

In earlier centuries, many of the town's residents lived largely as self-sufficiency, either directly or indirectly (as craftsmen and tradesmen) from the agriculture in the area . In Roman times, a trade route connected the cities of the Ebro Valley with the Cantabrian coast and the Iberian Meseta . Viticulture , which has been practiced since Roman times , gained in importance, especially in the 19th century, when French winemakers settled in the village to produce wine based on the French model. Better known than the wine, however, are the red peppers (Pimientos de Piquillo) of the area.

history

Lodosa - aqueduct
Lodosa - bull monument and church

Small prehistoric finds were discovered in the municipality. Parts of a Roman aqueduct (Acueducto de Alcanadre ) to supply the city of Calagurris ( Calahorra ) from around AD 100 are on the municipal area. Visigothic and even Moorish traces are missing. Briefly conquered by the Franks at the beginning of the 9th century, the area was under the influence of the Muslim Banu Qasi . The year 824 is considered to be the founding year of the Kingdom of Pamplona ; the creation of the Kingdom of Navarre took another 100 years longer. This experienced under Sancho III. (r. 1004-1035) the climax of the development of power. In his will, he divided the kingdom between his three sons, which subsequently led to constant and long-lasting conflicts with the kingdoms of Castile and Aragon , from which Lodosa, as a quasi border town, did not remain untouched. In 1366 the Castilian King Henry II marched into the area and was proclaimed king in Calahorra; two years later a Castilian army besieged the city of Lodosa. With the marriage between Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragón (1469), the Kingdom of Navarre came between two fronts - a situation that was only resolved with the conquest of the southern part of Navarre by the troops of Ferdinand II in 1512.

Attractions

The small town has only a few cultural or historical attractions:

  • There are some city palaces (palacios) from the 18th and 19th centuries. Century, including the town hall.
  • The three-aisled Iglesia de San Miguel comes from the 16./17. Century; In it, late Gothic styles (star vaults) mix with those of the Renaissance (portal, wall elevation). The main altar, which was completed in 1761, stands out among several baroque altars (retablos) .
  • Right next to the church is a bronze monument of a bull tearing itself away.
Surroundings
  • On the banks of the Ebro rises the cube of the Torre de Rada , a watch and defense tower from the 13th / 14th centuries. Century.
  • Approx. 2 km southwest of the city are the architectural remains of a Roman aqueduct.
