Ayegui (co-officially Aiegi in Basque ) is a Spanish municipality in Navarra , two kilometers from the city of Estella-Lizarra and around 45.5 km from the capital Pamplona . The place is located at the northeastern foot of the 1,048 meter high Montejurra mountain , from which one has a magnificent panoramic view of the area. The Autovía A-12 from Pamplona to Logroño runs right past the village. The population was 2,100 in 2012.

The first documentary mention comes from the 11th century . The monastery of Santa María la Real de Irache ( Spanish Monasterio de Santa María la Real de Irache ), 400 meters southwest of the town center, dates from the Middle Ages . It is a former Benedictine - monastery and is located on the French Way of the Camino de Santiago , in the Middle Ages an important pilgrim hostel . The former monastery has now been classified as a monument . The Navarre Ethnographic Museum, Museo Etnológico de Navarra “Julio Caro Baroja” , is currently being set up in part of the former monastery building . In addition, other areas are to be converted into a Parador hotel.

The Bodegas Irache winery with 150 hectares of acreage is an important local employer and was founded in 1891. Today the sub-area called "Tierra Estella" is one of the best areas of the Navarra Designation of Origin for the production of quality wines with great potential for expansion. The region with its vineyards supplied the royal house of Navarre with wine as early as the 12th century . The best-known grape varieties in the area are Tempranillo , Garnacha , Cabernet Sauvignon , Merlot , Graciano and white wines with the grape varieties Viura , Chardonnay and Malvasia . The history of the winery runs parallel to the monastery of the same name, where the first pilgrims' hospital on the Way of St. James was once established.
