Parliamentary elections in Italy 2001
The 2001 general election in Italy took place on May 13, 2001. The center-left coalition that had ruled since 1996 was not re-elected. Its alliance L'Ulivo under Francesco Rutelli was defeated by the center-right alliance Casa delle Libertà under Silvio Berlusconi , who promised a “radical change” in Italian politics during the election campaign.

With the invention of List Civette , however, the election led to the paradoxical result that not all parties in the alliance were able to occupy the parliamentary seats to which they were entitled according to the proportionality principles enshrined in the electoral law, as they did not have enough candidates in some regions. This was especially true for the Forza Italia of Silvio Berlusconi . She was even short of 12 candidates.
In total, the two lists together won 360 of 475 direct mandates and thus received the majority, but less than 0.2 percent of the votes.
