Il Girasole

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Il Girasole ( The Sunflower ) was a short-lived electoral alliance in Italy in 2001 between the Federazione dei Verdi and the Socialisti Democratici Italiani (SDI).

history

As early as October 28, 2000, Grazia Francescato , politician of the Federazione dei Verdi, brought the idea of a new alliance into play without deciding on an ally. On December 21, 2000, the daily newspaper La Repubblica published a call for the establishment of the new alliance with the signatures of politicians from various parties. Due to disputes about a common line and also about the participating parties, the Partito dei Comunisti Italiani ended their cooperation on February 11, 2001 and entered the elections alone. On February 26, 2001, the project was officially presented with two alliance partners, and the logo was presented on March 6.

Both parties were part of the larger alliance Ulivo and hoped that the proportional representation part of the election for the Camera dei deputati would have a better chance of overcoming the 4% hurdle together. In the elections on May 13, 2001, the list received only 2.2% and thus no seats via proportional representation. In the majority vote, however, 8 (Verdi) or 9 (SDI) candidates on the Ulivo’s joint list were able to move into the camera. After that, the two parties went their separate ways again.
