General election in Italy 1972
The 1972 parliamentary elections took place on May 7, 1972. They were the seventh after the end of World War II and the introduction of universal male and female suffrage. All 630 seats in the Chamber of Deputies and 315 of 323 seats in the Senate were elected .
In Italy from around 1969 (similar to, for example, Germany and France), extremist groups emerged and carried out attacks.
Enrico Berlinguer , PCI -President since March 17, 1972 (its predecessor Luigi Longo had resigned because of age and health reasons), hit a moderate price, and said goodbye to the Leninist model of Soviet communism - this process can as a turn towards Euro communism be understood . Berlinguer sought the so-called Historical Compromise , a coalition of Christian Democrats (DC), PCI and PSI . Within the PCI there was a lot of criticism against this course, especially from the radical New Left within the PCI, which eventually split off and stood for election as a “manifesto”. Social Democrats and Socialists again ran separately.
