Gains and losses
The 1983 parliamentary elections took place on June 26 and 27, 1983 . They were the tenth after the end of World War II and the introduction of universal male and female suffrage. The Socialists ( Partito Socialista Italiano ) succeeded in increasing their share of the vote at the expense of the dominant Christian Democrats ( Democrazia Cristiana ) and the Communists , the strongest opposition party to date, so that their chairman Bettino Craxi was elected head of government at the head of a coalition with the Christian Democrats has been. Apart from the brief episode under Giovanni Spadolini , Craxi was the first Italian head of government since 1945 who did not belong to the Christian Democrats.
