Centro Cristiano Democratico

The Centro Cristiano Democratico ( Christian Democratic Center, CCD) was a Christian-conservative center-right party in Italy that existed from 1994 to 2002.

It emerged in January 1994 by splitting off from Democrazia Cristiana (1942-1994), which was renamed Partito Popolare Italiano (PPI) shortly thereafter . According to an agreement between the two party presidents, the CCD received 15% of the assets of the Democrazia Cristiana, the rest went to the PPI. In the parliamentary elections in March 1994 , she entered with joint lists with the also newly founded Forza Italia party of the billionaire Silvio Berlusconi , with the CCD clearly being the smaller partner. Forza Italia – CCD was the strongest force in this election, the CCD received 27 of the 630 seats in the Camera dei deputati and 12 of the 315 senatorial seats . In the regional elections in 1995 in Lombardy , CCD and Forza Italia again formed an electoral alliance, whereby Roberto Formigoni received the majority as regional president.

The CCD teamed up with the 1996 split from PPI United Christian Democrats (CDU) to a common list together, which belonged to the center-right camp, while the national leadership of the PPI to participate in the center-left -Allianz Romano Prodi decided . In the European elections in 1999 , the two parties ran again separately, the CCD received 2.6% of the vote. For the 2001 parliamentary elections, the CCD and CDU reunited to form the common Biancofiore list , which scored 3.2% of the vote rather weakly, but thanks to the overall victory of the center-right coalition Casa delle Libertà , they received a total of 41 MPs and 29 senators.

On December 6, 2002, the CCD and CDU and the small Democrazia Europea merged as the third partner to form the new Unione dei Democratici Cristiani e di Centro (UDC, later shortened to Unione di Centro ).
