The mechanization of agriculture , the abandonment of small farms and the resulting loss of jobs in the countryside have led to a significant decline in the population since the middle of the 20th century.

economy

Sansol and the surrounding area are traditionally oriented towards agriculture; small traders, craftsmen and day laborers had settled in the village, all of whom have emigrated. Today, in addition to agriculture and viticulture, tourism - mainly in the form of renting out holiday apartments (casas rurales) - plays a not insignificant economic role.

history

The place was founded in 1176 when King Sancho the Wise gave the place to settle. The name results from a polished form of the martyr San Zoilo from Córdoba , whose patronage had chosen the monastery of San Zoilo de Carrión de los Condes , which maintained a commandery in this place . The parish church dedicated to San Zoilo is the remaining evidence of the activities of the at times very influential monastery. Bravo Lozano suspects Sansol to be the location of a pilgrims' hostel or a hospice, the location of which is given in the Book of Jacob behind Los Arcos and the first river. Between 1463 and 1753 Sansol formed an exclave of the Kingdom of Castile .

Attractions

Iglesia de San Zoilo
  • The baroque parish church of San Zoilo partially integrates the structural structures of a previous building. The tower from the time of the new building rises narrow and over a square floor plan, merges into the octagon at the level of the belfry and over a small dome to the tower lantern . Inside there is a font from the 16th century and paintings from the 18th century. The main retable is neoclassical and sparsely decorated, alongside paintings imitating marble, there are gilding, the Calvary scene dates from the 17th century. In the transept there is a neoclassical altar with a picture of the Virgen de Nieva . The 14th century is the date of creation of an interesting Peter figure sitting on a lion throne. In the sacristy there are two crucifixes and a figure of the Virgen del Rosario and a baroque reliquary from the 17th century and a silver goblet in the Rococo style . A gold-plated portapaz , a measuring instrument , is now kept in the Pamplona Diocesan Museum.
  • There are also various town houses that are worth seeing, as well as a baroque palace from 1702 below the church, which is one of the most important secular buildings in the Estella area.
