economy

The community was and is characterized by agriculture for centuries. All kinds of tradespeople had settled in the village. Today pilgrimage tourism plays a certain role in the economic life of the place.

history

Celtic , Roman , Visigoth and even Islamic-Moorish traces have not yet been discovered in the municipality. The reconquest ( reconquista ) by the Christians took place at the end of the 9th and beginning of the 10th century. The place name was first mentioned in 989 due to a gift from the Navarre King García Sanchez II to the monastery of San Juan de la Peña . The place experienced a certain boom in the Middle Ages due to the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela . In the 14th century Peter I of Castile gave the place to his faithful Ortiz de Zúñiga, whose descendants still exercised the manorial rule (señorio) over the place until the 19th century .
