The mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms have led to a shortage of jobs since the 1950s and, as a result, to a large part of the population moving to the cities ( rural exodus ). Due to the proximity to the city of Burgos, however, the decline in population has come to a standstill in the last years of the 20th century.
economy
For centuries, the region has been characterized almost exclusively by agriculture and livestock, with self-sufficiency being the focus of economic activity. Long-life or preserved foods such as grain , cheese , sausage, etc. could be bartered or sold on the markets in Burgos.
history
Celtic or Celtiberian as well as Roman and Visigoth traces are missing. After the conquest of central Spain by Islam, the area was largely deserted for centuries and was only repopulated ( repoblación ) after the reconquest ( reconquista ) at the end of the 9th century . Rabé is mentioned for the first time in a document from the year 946 ; at this time 3 churches are already mentioned. A castle (castillo) was built nearby . Like the places in the area, Rabé is believed to have belonged to the Las Huelgas monastery in the 12th century , and later to the manorial estate of the Archdiocese of Burgos - however, precise details are missing.
