In the second half of the 19th and first half of the 20th century the population fluctuated around 300 people. Thereafter, the mechanization of agriculture led to the migration of a large part of the population to the cities. The comparatively cheap land prices led to the construction of housing estates and allowed the population of the place to grow again around the turn of the millennium.

economy

The region has been largely shaped by agriculture for centuries. At the end of the 20th century, two industrial areas ( poligonos industriales ) were designated.

history

The place Villa de Eriezo is mentioned for the first time in a document from the year 969 and belonged in the Middle Ages to the manor ( señorio ) of the nearby monasteries Las Huelgas Reales and San Pedro de Cardeña ; then the Archdiocese of Burgos acted as landlord. This situation did not change until the abolition of the monasteries and the medieval manors ( desamortisación ) in Spain.

Attractions

  • The Iglesia de San Pedro Cátedra , a simple classical building from the late 18th century, stands on a hill above the town. According to tradition, it was two stonemasons who planned and erected the building , which was made of precisely hewn natural stones. The bell tower is from a previous building from 1702. The entrance is - as usual in the region - on the south side of the nave. Inside the polygonal apse is a baroque altarpiece .
  • A hermit chapel ( Ermita de San Isidro ) was built in 1859 on the town's main square ( Plaza Mayor ).
  • A little outside there is a ' wayside cross' ( crucero ) on a stepped base; the monument is also reminiscent of a court column ( rollo or picota ) as can be found more often in the area.
  • Two hermit churches ( Ermita de San Juan y Santa María and Ermita de Santo Tomás ) are in the vicinity of the place. It is believed that they once belonged to two different monasteries, none of which has survived.
  • A double-arched stone bridge from the 18th or 19th century spans the Río Ausín.
