The mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms have led to a significant decline in the number of inhabitants since the middle of the 20th century. The municipality also includes the hamlets (pedanías) Paúles del Agua , Pinedillo and Torrecitores del Enebral, each with about 25 inhabitants .

economy

The inhabitants of the rural community live mainly from agriculture (agriculture, cattle breeding and viticulture); the community is part of the Arlanza (DO) wine-growing region . Since the 1960s, the summer rental of holiday homes (casas rurales) has also played a certain economic role.

history

Celtic , Roman , Visigoth and even Moorish traces are missing. The place is first mentioned in a document in 1030; At the end of the 16th century he belonged to the manor (señorio) of the Duke of Lerma and the Abbey of Santo Domingo de Silos .

Attractions

Torrecitores - defense tower
  • The parish church of San Miguel Arcángel is a single-nave building from the 13th to 18th centuries. The late Romanesque south portal contrasts with the rest of the building, which was fundamentally redesigned in the 18th century. The bell gable (espadaña) was optically shifted by an extension to the west of the church .
  • Right next to the church is the rectory built in the 18th century .
Surroundings
  • In the vicinity of the place are the ruins of several pigeon houses (palomares) from the 17th to 19th centuries with sloping pent roofs .
  • The small Iglesia de San Mamès in the hamlet of Paúles de Agua is the almost unknown in Central Europe St. Mamas consecrated; it has a Romanesque portal and a beautiful Gothic apse . There are also some rock cellars ( bodegas ) .
  • In the hamlet of Torrecitores del Enebral there is a medieval defense tower that probably belonged to an estate.
