The mechanization of agriculture , the abandonment of small farms and the associated loss of jobs have led to a significant decline in the number of inhabitants since the middle of the 20th century ( rural exodus ). The municipality also includes the almost abandoned hamlets (pedanías) Albacastro , Castrecias and Valtierra de Albacastro .

economy

The inhabitants of the rural community lived for centuries as a self from agriculture . Urban markets were too far away and so only durable or durable products (animal skins, cheese, sausage) could be exchanged or sold with traveling traders.

history

Almost nothing is known about the origins of the place. Celtic , Roman , Visigoth and even Moorish traces are missing. In the early 10th century, the area was recaptured ( reconquista ) by the Christians under the leadership of Count Gonzalo Fernández and then repopulated or repopulated ( repoblación ) ; During this time, the place that received a church and a castle in the 11th or 12th century was probably built.

Attractions

  • The hll. The local church, dedicated to Julian and Basilissa , was built in several stages. Oldest remaining component is probably from rubble existing nave ; later the Romanesque portico and in the late Gothic and Renaissance periods the buttresses stabilized apse and the bell tower (campanario) . Some column shafts and capitals of the porch are richly decorated. The west window of the portico shows an exceptionally richly decorated arched frame in the manner of an Alfiz with multi-pass arches , miniature turrets and two figures that are interpreted as Adam and Eve . The portal , which protrudes slightly from the line of the wall, is stepped back in two ways; one of the archivolts shows a ball stick. The two-aisled interior of the church is vaulted with ribs and contains two remarkable baroque altars .
  • In the immediate vicinity of the church are the remains of the medieval castle (castillo), which was formerly surrounded by a moat (foso ) . You can see parts of the castle wall and the approximately 20 m high and almost completely preserved windowless keep (torre del homenaje) , the wall thickness of which is approximately 1.20 m.
Surroundings
  • About 2 km from the village is one of the St. Apseless chapel (ermita) , consecrated to Lucia of Syracuse , made of rubble stones with the use of some spoils .
