Mozarabic Alfiz from Santiago de Peñalba , León

An Alfiz is presumably based on the Andalusian-Arabic word alḥiz from Classical Arabic (حيز / ḥayyiz  / 'area') name for an architectural decorative element in the form of a rectangular or (almost) square frame around a curved window, door or arcade opening. The remaining gussets ( albanegas ) are sometimes undecorated, but sometimes also filled with stones of different colors or with stucco ornaments. These frames are widespread in Islamic architecture , but are also characteristic of Mozarabic architecture and the Mudejar style in Spain and the Christian architecture of southern and central Europe that is partly linked to it.
