The mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms have led to a lack of jobs since the 1950s and, as a result, to a migration of a large part of the population to the larger cities ( rural exodus ). The hamlet (pedanía) Ventosilla , which still has around 30 inhabitants, also belongs to the municipality .
economy
For centuries, the region was dominated by agriculture almost exclusively for the purpose of self-sufficiency ; Animal husbandry and viticulture were also of great importance . Long-life or preserved food such as grain , cheese , sausage, etc. could be bartered or sold at the markets in Aranda de Duero; the region's wine was shipped to Central and Northern Europe. The community is now part of the Ribera del Duero wine region .
history
Finds from the Celtic , Roman , Visigothic and even from the Islamic - Moorish period have not yet been made in the municipality. Probably towards the end of the 9th century, the area was recaptured ( reconquista ) by Diego Rodríguez Porcelos (r. 873-885), the second count of Castile and founder of Burgos, and repopulated by himself and his successors with Christians from the north and Mozarabs ( repoblación ) . Later, the two districts and their parishes grew into a market town with over 1,500 inhabitants.
Attractions
- The Iglesia de San Pedro Apóstol , which looks rather defensive because of its crenellated bell tower (campanario) , was built in the 15th and 16th centuries. The Renaissance portal with its formed of rows of cassettes fields archivolts is unusually on the north side of the church. In its two-aisled interior it contains a figure of the crucified Christ from the 15th century.
- The Iglesia de Santa María la Mayor , about 150 m away and built in the 15th century, is dominated by an imposing bell tower. The interior of the church has three aisles and has an altarpiece (retablo) in the late Baroque style of Churriguerism .
- Numerous rock cellars ( bodegas ) have been driven into the crumbly rock of the former castle hill (Cerro del Castillo) . Almost nothing is left of the former castle.
- Surroundings
- The Ermita de San Juan , located about 3 km southeast of the village in the midst of fields and vineyards, is a building from the 16th century with a tower and keel arch portal . Buttresses that appear somewhat oversized support the exterior walls, which are made of precisely hewn stones.
